This study aims to show how the sense of self possessed by Christian teenagers and motherly care are correlated. This study looked at middle school students in their teenage years and dealt with an in-depth evaluation about the problems and correlation based on the contents of several counseling sessions. Also, the study collected and analyzed data pertaining to the phenomena through a qualitative research method for figures that are difficult to explain with a quantitative method. The study addressed their identity as teenagers at puberty, which is not integrated with their unstable emotional state that does not match their faith, by being very attentive to their stories, and conducted research into the correlation between the initial relationship with their mother and the pattern of motherly care by attempting an interview with their mothers.
The study attempted a grounded theoretical approach through the research, and the context was intended to be mainly based on the object relations theory of Margaret Mahler, Winnicutt, Sullivan, and Melanie Klein. In particular, the study extracts the relationship between teenagers and the quality of motherly care, and seeks out solutions by reviewing the conditions of a “sufficiently good mother”.
When reviewing the research results, first, teenagers exposed to an indifferent upbringing were filled with distrust as they could not form their integrative identity, and were likely to be very selfish. Second, teenagers who have mothers with mood disorders are likely to be exposed to emotional disorder, and it is also difficult to build a right “image” in faith. Third, mothers who use excessive force in making students study can make their children helpless, and in serious cases this may lead their children to deviate, and children feel a great gap in their views on faith. Fourth, obstinate mothers can make children uneasy, and children show fear in sensitive matters, and God’s figure may be very obstinate to them. Therefore, children have less faith in free love. Fifth, unconditionally good motherly care may make children feel burdened. Children may show depression as their emotions cannot be expressed if the mother takes care of them in expectation that children will become too mature. Sixth, children exposed to forced faith may rather drift farther from faith, and feel a sense of estrangement through their parents’ views about faith.
The study can seek out solutions for the problems of Christian teenagers whose unstable identity may lead even to withdrawal from faith through this research by identifying the causes in detail as well as the fact that the identity of a Christian teenager is very closely coupled with motherly care. In order to have teenagers achieve desirable emotional integration, first, it is necessary to offer an education program from the perspective of Christianity in a way that mothers can have an attitude of mature care, and to have a counseling program specially designed for teenagers. This study is to propose that there would be more opportunities to lead teenagers to become mature men of faith if diverse programs for re-education could be materialized in churches.
