The purpose of this study was to examine the affective characteristics of students with physical disabilities by using MMPI and 16PF.
The subjects in this study were 80 boys and girls in the secondary departments of schools for youth with physical handicaps in the cities of Busan, Ulsan and Daegu. The instruments used in this study were MMPI and 16PF.
The collected data were analyzed on the basis of T score 65 for each clinical scale, and by gender and school grade according to Diamond's model. SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) WIN 11.5 program was employed to conduct test, t-test and one-way ANOVA.
The findings of this study were as follows;
First, regarding the results of MMPI about the affective characteristics of the students with physical disabilities, those students were notable the most in the clinical scale of Hy and the least in Si. By gender, the girls were more serious in the clinical scale of Hy than the boys, and the middle schoolers tended to be more serious in Pd and Sc than the high schoolers.
The students whose T scores were above 65 in each clinical scale accounted for 46.3 percent, which showed that many got into a lot of troubles related to adaptability due to their personality. The girls had a more tendency to be neurotic and mentally deranged than the boys.
Second, concerning the affective characteristics of the students with physical disabilities according to 16PF, they were outstanding the most in terms of morality and the least in progressiveness. By gender, the boys were more passionate and blamed themselves than the girls. It indicated that students with physical disabilities should start to receive more intensive personality education in kindergarten or elementary department, and home education should be provided to them as well as early as possible.
Third, as for the results of 16PF about the affective characteristics of the groups of different MMPI profile types and whose T scores were above 65 in each clinical scale, the normal group was more notable in terms of ego strength and passion than the abnormal group. It implied that the students with physical handicaps were more likely, than students with no disabilities, to rate themselves lower, to have an inferiority complex, to be oversensitive toward their own physical function or health, and eventually to be under heavy pressure.
