An aerated constructed wetland was designed to treat 85m3 raw sewage everyday. It was composed of aerobic tank and anaerobic tank connected in series. Inside the aerobic tank was installed the natural air draft system whose driving force for air supply was the temperature difference between the ambient air and air inside the tank.
More than 90% of BOD, COD and SS was removed at the aerobic tank. Organotrophic bacteria which were essential for the removal of organic pollutants were found at the sand and gravel beds of the aerobic tank.
Influent concentration of T-N was directly proportional to influent concentration of TKN(Total kjeldahl nitrogen), and TKN was mostly removed in the aerated tank. However, concentration of T-N was directly proportional to concentration of NO3--N at the exit of the aerobic tank. Concentration of NO3--N increased at the aerobic tank and decreased at the anaerobic tank. Significant amount of nitrification bacteria were found to live at the sand and gravel beds of the aerobic tank, and large amounts of the denitrification bacteria lived at the beds of the anaerobic tank. Those results indicate that T-N was mostly removed biological by the nitrification and denitrification bacteria.
About 60% of the T-P was removed at the aerobic tank. T-P was believed to be removed through physicochemical procedure rather biological one.
The removal efficiencies of T-N and T-P were higher than 80%.
The average concentrations of effluent were 3.66mg/L BOD, 4.83mg/L COD, 0.97mg/L SS, 350CFU/mL E. coli, 6.81mg/L T-N and 0.88mg/L T-P, respectively. The aerated constructed wetland was stably operated during one year.
