The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of attitude for Physical Education class on mental health. This research is also targeted to develop the students' emotions and feelings which can induce lifelong Physical activities.
The subjects were 776 middle school students, from 18 classes. They responded to a Questionnaire, which mainly focused on the Self-Administration method. It was analyzed how three primary factors; recognition of class aim, participation in the activities, and reception of evaluation, specificly influence their attitude for PE. It was also applied to 5 elements: physical changes related to mental health and anxiety, personal sensitivity, depression, and mental disorder. The major findings were as follows.
Individual characteristics, except the grades, significantly influenced their behavior so it can be said that hypothesis 1 and 2 were supported. Regarding their behaviors, boys are comparatively more positive than girls. Their gender and school year also showed a correlation with their attitudes. But it has little correlation with school type and learning type.
After looking into mental health differences between boys and girls, it was found that boys got higher scores than girls in dealing with physical changes relating to mental health, depression and anxiety. With regard to whole mental health, boys are also shown to have a higher scores than girls. There was no signigicant difference between school types and grades. Each school grade got a 1% significance degree in mental health, depression and anxiety where as it got a 5% significance degree in personal sensitivity.
Therefore it is concluded that students' attitude in P․E class positively correlated to mental health, with the exception of personal sensitivity. The students behavior influence mental health. Further research and analysis needs to be done to look more closely at the correlation between cities and countries, and correlation among specialized schools.
