The study focuses on uncovering the effects of self-monitoring strategies on-task performance and achievement in math subject of students with mild mental retardation. Furthermore, it has been observed if the attained, changed behaviors still stay effective three weeks after having trained students with the strategies.
The subjects of this study are three elementary school students with mild mental retardation who study in normal classes and have an external locus of control with low level of task performance and achievement in math. They are in the third, fifth, and sixth grade, respectively.
In this research are the baseline, the interventions, and the maintenance examination employed through the multiple-baseline design. Twenty four times of interventions have been performed and operated for eight weeks. The interventions consisted of training period and observation period. During the training session, the subjects were trained with attention-self monitoring strategies together with performance-self monitoring strategies. During the observation session, they were assigned with the tasks of writing and drawing the attention-self monitoring sheets and graphs, the tasks of writing and drawing the performance-self monitoring sheets and graphs and with reconstructed math task sheets while they were provided with the only tip of a bell sound. Despite several interventions, there has been a low level of improvement. Therefore, there has been a slight change made on the condition of the interventions by narrowing the physical distance between a teacher and the subjects.
The results of the study are as follows; firstly, the task performance of math by the subjects has increased through self-monitoring strategies. Secondly, there has been an increased rate in the completion of the task by the subjects. Thirdly, there has showed enhanced accuracy in math task. Fourth, there has found a high level of task performance and achievement in the maintenance examination. Lastly, the effect of the self-monitoring strategies proved much higher if there narrowed the physical distance between a teacher and the students.
To sum up, when self-monitoring strategies were applied to the students with mild mental retardation who suffer from ADHD and have an external locus of control, their task performance and the level of achievement has developed significantly and the effects maintained after the end of the interventions. Although self-monitoring strategies considered meaningful when it is directed by students themselves without any supervision or instructions from a teacher, there has been a considerable increase in the effects of the strategies when there was intentionally a shorter distance between the teacher and the students compared with that there was not.
As a result, from the fact that self-monitoring strategies can act effectively in a short period of time and enhance the motivation and responsibility of the students, it is expected that the strategies can also be effective in integrated classes.
