The objective of this study is to reveal the antecedents and outcomes of trust, or more specifically swift trust, among team members in a temporary task team. In preceding studies, the main objective was to analyze the trust antecedents between leaders and their subordinates in a normal organization. However, there has not been a study in regard to the outcomes and trust antecedents among team members within a temporary task team, which exists for a limited period of time. Therefore, this study reveals the differences in how trust is formed among team members in a temporary task team vis-a-vis workers in a normal organization. In addition, the main purpose of this study is to analyze trust antecedents based on social network variables and conduct trust research among team members of a temporary task team.
To accomplish the objective of this study, a research model will be created and the hypothesis will be proven through preceding studies. To test the hypothesis, survey data was collected after conducting a questionnaire among film production crews, which were produced two different movies in Korea, and TV production crews of fourteen TV series aired on KBS, MBC, and SBS. The survey only included crews working on ongoing productions as of October 2006.
The conclusions drawn from this study are briefly summarized as follows:
First, the attributes of each team member within a temporary task team have an overall positive effect on swift trust. More specifically, higher levels of ability, reputation and benevolence among the attributes of the team members lead to higher levels of swift trust. However, this study shows that integrity has little or no influence on swift trust.
Second, the social network of the team members has a direct influence on the swift trust among team members in a temporary task team. The strength of the ties in each individual''s social network had a strong impact on swift trust. However, the study proves that the size and range of the ties in the social network has little influence.
Third, it is clearly proven that swift trust in a temporary task team has a positive influence on the work attitudes of the team members. In other words, if swift trust exists between team members, it will have a positive influence on each individual''s job commitment, team commitment and organizational citizenship behavior.
Fourth, in terms of the role of trust, swift trust was seen to play an intermediary role between preceding factors and outcome variables. Factors such as ability, reputation, benevolence, and strength of ties comprise swift trust and these factors directly influence the working attitudes of the team members.
