The purpose of this study is to investigate the intrinsic principles of deletion in Gangneung Dialect. In Phonology, ''''deletion'''' is a phenomenon certain phonological elements disappear on the surface of language. This thesis deals with the common principle of deletion considering the Optimality Theory(OT) as its theoretical basis. In other words, the each deletion will be explained through consistent constraints and the ranking of constraints, which will lead to the general explanation about deletion. Also, in the process of positing the constraints, the thesis approaches to ''''optionality'''' that was hard to explain through the rule based theory.
This thesis consists of 5 chapters as a whole. In Chapter 1, the aim, the subject, and the method of the study are introduced. Chapter 2 reveals the theoretical background for the study of deletion dividing it into the rule based study and the constraint based study. First, the rule based study deals with the flow of language theories from the standard theory of generative phonology to the appearance of OT, and the theories have their limitations. Moreover, through organizing the concepts and types of deletion, it represents that the studies of deletion in the rule based theory have mostly considered individual phenomenon. Next, the basic principle of OT is shortly organized in the constraint based study. Also, the issue of reranking is discussed through partial ranking in relation to optional deletion and obligatory deletion. Through this constraint based study, the individual deletion phenomenon will be explained broadly.
In Chapter 3, the practical analysis about individual deletion is accomplished through the constraint based theory. First, in the deletion of consonants, the analysis deals with ''''h'''' deletion and ''''l'''' deletion and consonant cluster simplification. In the deletion of vowels, ''''a/?'''' deletion, ''''?'''' deletion, ''''i'''' deletion, and ''''o/u'''' deletion is revealed. According to the constraint theory, it is ''''constraint'''' to account for phonological motivation of each phenomenon more directly than the previous discussion. Therefore, the intrinsic principle of deletion means the interaction among the constraints that affect to the phenomenon itself. The constraints that become motivations to each phenomenon are as follows:
<constraints in the individual deletion >
A. ''''h'''' deletion: REDUCE(glottal)
B. ''''l'''' deletion: OCP(place)
C. consonant cluster simplification: MAX(+sonorant), MAX(-coronal)
D. ''''a/?'''' deletion: ONSET
E. identical vowel deletion : OCP(vowel)
F. ''''?'''' deletion: REDUCE(high)
G. ''''i'''' deletion: OCP(palatal)
H. ''''o/u'''' deletion: OCP(round)
Based on the constraint of individual deletion and the ranking of constraints as discussed in Chapter 3, I consider the interaction of constraints involved in deletion. That is, the explanation of the deletion is broadly explained in the aspects of opposition of constraints and ranking of constraints. First, the opposition of constraints means the interaction of two constraints which delicately function to the choice of candidate. This opposition happens in the relations not only between markedness constraint and faithfulness constraint, but also between speaker and hearer, and casual speech and formal speech. Second, the ranking of constraints influences the deletion. The constraints related to the deletion and the ranking of constraints indicate an aspect of ranking of constraints particular to Korean as well as the principle of realizing the deletion.
Above all, OT has a merit to explain the conspiracy among different phonological phenomena as a constraint. This thesis can suggest the relation through the constraints affecting the each deletion as follows:
<Conspiracy of the individual deletion>
A. OCP
OCP(place) : ''''l'''' deletion
OCP(vowel) : identical vowel deletion
OCP(palatal) : ''''i'''' deletion
OCP(round) : ''''o/u'''' deletion
B. REDUCE
REDUCE(glottal) : ''''h'''' deletion
REDUCE(high) : ''''?'''' deletion
C. ONSET
''''a/?'''' deletion
identical vowel deletion
''''?'''' deletion
''''i'''' deletion
''''o/u'''' deletion
In Chapter 5, the entire contents is summarized and the rest of issues are arranged. In this thesis, the related constraints and the ranking is considered by setting the limits to the deletion. However, it is also necessary to broadly consider the phonological phenomena, as well as the deletion. Because it will contribute to the explanation about the constraint set and the constraint ranking which dynamically operate in Korean.
