The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between self-control and friendship of elementary school children. The research questions raised in this study are as follows:
1. Is there a difference in friendship according to the level of self-control of elementary school children?
2. Is there a difference in friendship according to the level of self- control by gender?
The participants in this study were 265 children (boys 150, girls 115) in the fifth grade from one elementary school in cheongju city. A questionnaire to measure self-control and friendship was administered to them. Data were analyzed with one-way analysis of variance (F-tests) using SAS.
The results of this study are summarized as follows:
1. A significant difference was found in both the total score and all the five sub-areas of friendship according to the level of self-control. Children who scored higher in self-control scored significantly higher in friendship.
2. In case of both boys and girls, a significant difference was found in both the total score and all the five sub-areas of friendship according to the level of self-control. Both boys and girls who scored higher in self-control scored significantly higher in friendship.
