The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the weight related external pressure, self-esteem, and body image on eating disorder behavior among female adolescents and to explore the pathways of eating disorder behavior.
Research was focused on :
1. state of weight control of female adolescent
2. difference of teenagers' body image and eating disorder according to Body Mass Index(BMI) and diet experiences
3. course of how pathways of self-esteem and weigh-related external pressure on disordered eating behaviors mediated by the body image
Six hundred and eleven adolescent girls between 7th~11th grade in Chung-ju city, Chung-buk province were given questionnaires. Data were analyzed with frequency, t-test, ANOVA with Scheffe ad-hoc test, correlation analysis using SPSS statistical program and AMOS 5.0 program.
The results are summarized as follows :
First, Adolescent girls want to be thinner as they get older. Though over half of total sample were underweighted(58.5%), 32% out of this group had at least a diet experience and 93.2% out of the whole sample considered going on a diet for weight control. 81% of students thought excercise as the most effective method for losing weight. Adolescents' favorite diet method was combination of exercise, and controlling appetite. Symptoms reported after dieting were dizziness, constipation and inappetence in order.
Body image and eating disorder behavior showed significant differences according to BMI and diet experiences. Higher eating disorder behavior and lower body satisfaction were observed in students with normal weight and overweight than with underweight of BMI, students who had experience of dieting than no experience.
Second, exploration of pathways among variables showed that self-esteem, pressures from parents and peer did not have any direct effect, but indirect effect mediated by body image on eating disorder behavior. But peer pressure had direct effect on eating disorder behavior of female adolescents.
Therefore, developing a preventive program of adolescents' eating disorder behavior, it is necessary for practionner to promote adolescent girls' own body image and to focus on social skills to deal with peer pressure effective.
