The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of emotional climate in family of origin mediated by marital satisfaction and parenting role competence on father’s parenting involvement.
Subjects of this study consisted 250 fathers who had children aged 5 to 7 drawn from 6 kindergartens and 4 nursery schools which were located in Cheongju city. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, Cronbach α, t-test, ANOVA with Tukey post-hoc test, and correlation using SPSSWIN program. The theoretical model was separately tested according to types of father's parenting involvement in preschool children.
The results of this research were as follows:
First, fathers under 40-year-old perceived marital satisfaction much higher than fathers over 40-year-old. In terms of marital period, fathers who had been married for less than 7 years perceived marital satisfaction higher, while those who have been married for more than 7 years perceived it lower. Also fathers who had the high level of education involved in childcare more than fathers who had the low level. Fathers who worked as professionals/officials, office workers, service industry /entrepreneurs gave more emotional support to children than fathers who had manufacturing industries/labor intensive jobs.
Second, the emotional climate in family of origin directly affected marital satisfaction and parenting role competence, and indirectly influenced on parenting role competence through marital satisfaction. Also the emotional climate in family of origin had a direct effect on father's parenting involvement such as childcare, doing recreational activities together, emotional support, and education for living through marital satisfaction and parenting role competence.
Third, marital satisfaction had a direct effect on parenting role competence and had an indirect effect on father’s childcare, doing recreational activities together, and education for living through parenting role competence. Moreover, marital satisfaction directly and indirectly affected the father's emotional support by parenting role competence.
Fourth, the parenting role competence affected all factors of father's parenting involvement such as childcare, doing recreational activities together, emotional support, and education for living. Therefore, father’s parenting role competence was the most strong factor to predict father's parenting involvement.
