The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mother's depression and sleep quality, and marital conflict on children's sleep problem.
Subjects of this study consisted of 536 mothers having below 5-year-old children from 3 preschools and 9-year-old children from 4 schools in Cheongju city. Data were analyzed by SPSS 12.0 with the methods of frequency, percentage, Cronbach α coefficient, t-test, F-test, Scheffe post-hoc test, correlation, and hierarchical regression.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, there were significant differences in children's sleep problem according to children's age. That is, the level of infant's sleep problem was higher than school children's sleep problem.
Second, there were significant differences in marital conflict according to father's educational background. The level of marital conflict was higher when father's educational background was lower level.
Third, there were significant differences in mother's depression and marital conflict according to family's income. The level of mother's depression and marital conflict were higher when family's income was not sufficient.
Fourth, there were significant differences in children's sleep problem according to the number of children. The level of children's sleep problem was higher when children's number is one.
Fifth, there were significant differences in mother's sleep quality according to mother's employment. Mothers having no job had the difficulty of fall asleep and mothers having a job had the difficulty of awakening in the morning.
Sixth, there was an interacting effect between mother's daytime dysfunction and family income on children's sleep problem. When mother's daytime dysfunction was low and family income was high, children had more sleep problem than children from low income family. In contrast, when mother's daytime dysfunction was high and when the family income was low, children had less sleep problem than those who from high income family.
Also, there was an interacting effect between marital conflict and family income on infant's sleep problem. When the marital conflict was low and family income was low, infants had more sleep problem than other children. In contrast, when the marital conflict was high, infants had sleep problem regardless to family income.
Finally, there was an interacting effect between marital conflict and family income on child's sleep problem. When the marital conflict was low and family income was low, school children had more sleep problem than children from low high income family. In contrast, when the marital conflict was high, school children had a high level of sleep problem regardless of family income.
