Self-esteem affects not only quality of life, satisfaction with living, adaptation in reality on ones but also curing and rehabilitation on disabilities. One of them is chronic schizophrenics. According to self-esteem study in schizophrenic, the one who has high self-esteem is satisfied with his/her mental health, has positive affect and satisfaction with social relations. And the one with low self-esteem has dissatisfaction with his/her mental health and social relations, dominance of negative affects, anxiety/depression, etc.. A variety of programs related with self-esteem in schizophrenic have been done and reported the result but
drop out has become a problem.
To make up for the weak points of the programs, it tries to change self-esteem in schizophrenic through priming stimuli. Michael & Dauenheimer(2003) tried to manipulate self-esteem in undergraduate students using priming stimuli. It's their replication study. The stimuli were presented in computer monitor, and the priming stimuli were divided into positive(e.g. 'I'm smart.', 'I'm cheerful.') / negative(e.g. 'I'm stupid.', 'I'm depressed.') and subliminal/supraliminal.
60 people and 52 schizophrenic were divided into 4 groups-subliminal positive, subliminal negative, supraliminal positive, supraliminal negative-randomly. With SSES they were measured their self-esteem before and after the presentation.
To control remained difference it used ANCOVA. The result is that priming stimuli worked on schizophrenia so the self-esteem significantly changed. The self-esteem rose up when they were presented with positive word and drop down when they were presented with negative word both subliminal and supraliminal.
