The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative influence of parental academic involvement and children's self-control in homework management of elementary school students.

The subjects of this study consisted 480 elementary school students (the 4th grade 217 and the 6th grade 263) in Cheongju city and Daejeon city. Data were analyzed with t-test, F-test, Tukey post-hoc test, Cronbach α, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression using SPSS program.

The results of this study were as follows:

First, there were significant differences in the sub scales of parental academic involvement which consisted of parental support, parental encouragement and parental competitive comparison according to children's sex, parent's age, and parent's educational levels.

Second, there were significant differences in children's self-control according to children's sex, age, and parent's educational level. Girls' self-control such as reflection and resistance to temptation were higher than boys. Students of fourth grade were higher in self-control such as tolerance of noxious situation and resistance to temptation than 6th grade students.

Third, there were significant differences in homework management according to gender and age. Home management such as managing time, arranging environment, focusing attention and monitoring motivation were higher in girls than boys. The monitoring motivation of homework was higher 4th grade students than 6th grade ones. In addition, there were the significant differences in managing time and arranging environment according to father's educational levels. The was significant differences in arranging environment, focusing attention and monitoring motivation according to mother's educational levels.

Fourth, there were statistically significant differences in the effects of parental academic involvement and children's self-control on homework management according to gender. For boys, homework management was predicted by parental support and parental encouragement of parental academic involvement, and the reflection, resistance temptation, tolerance of noxious situation, and emotional control of self-control. Girl's homework management was related to parental encouragement of parental academic involvement and reflection, tolerance of noxious situation, resistance temptation of self-control. The reflection of self-control was the most strong factor to explain children's homework management regardless of gender.

Fifth, there were statistically significant differences in the effects of parental academic involvement and children's self-control on homework management according to age. For 4th grade students, homework management was predicted by parental support of parental academic involvement, and the reflection, tolerance of noxious situation, and emotional control of self-control. Sixth grade students' homework management was related to parental encouragement of parental academic involvement and reflection, tolerance of noxious situation, resistance temptation, emotional control of self-control. The reflection of self-control was the most strong factor to explain children's homework management regardless of age.

The results of this study indicate that the effect of self-control is more strongly related to children's homework than parental academic involvement.
