The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of intermarried mothers' personal characteristics, marital adjustment, and children's behavioral temperament on parenting stress.
Reserch foci were:
1. To find out differences in parenting stress among intermarried mother's according to socio-demographic variables.
2. To analyze the effects of intermarried mother's personal characteristics, marital adjustment, and children's behavioral temperament on their parenting stress.
The subjects of this study involved total of 102 intermarried mothers whose children's age was between three and five in Chungbuk and Gangwon provinces. Mother's native countries are Japan, the Philippine, the Southeast Asia, and China.
Data were analyzed with frequency, t-test, ANOVA with Duncan post-hoc test, correlation, multi-regression analysis using SPSS program.
The results were as follows:
First, there were statistically significant differences in the subvariables of related caregiving stress among intermarried mothers. Mother's parenting of difficulties of family life in korea and unavailability of child care information and the period of residency in Korea brought differences in caregiving stress. The greater the level of difficulties of family life and unavailability of caregiving information and the longer the period of residency in Korea, the higher the caregiving stress of intermarried mothers.
Second, there were statistically significant differences in general daily life caregiving stress among intermarried mothers according to intermarried mothers' age, duration of marriage and family type. When they were young, with short duration of married life and in the nuclear family, mothers perceive high level of general daily life caregiving stress.
Third, mother's self esteem and children's behavioral temperament had impact on related caregiving stress. When intermarried mothers had high level of self esteem and their children had difficult behavioral temperament, they perceived higher caregiving stress related to parenting role. Intermarried mother's general daily life caregiving stress was influenced by both their age and marital intimacy. Relatively old mothers who perceive their marital intimacy not close enough felt their general daily life caregiving stress was high.
