This study aims at inquiring into the characteristics of students' verbal interaction according to the leader's style in MBL (microcomputer based laboratory) experiment class in which discussion was emphasized, along with the scientific investigation ability and the scholastic achievement by group. For this purpose, three research problems such as analysis of verbal interaction style in MBL experiment class, characteristics of verbal interaction by group according to the leader's style, and relation between scientific investigation ability and scholastic achievement by group according to the leader's style were used. A program was conducted in which discussion was emphasized involving 32 first-year students of 5 classes in a middle school, in which they took part in research activities following the developed guidebook and report for MBL experiment class. After considering the results of the SRTII test, TSPS (test of science process skills), pre-test of scholastic achievement and NEO adolescent character test, and the advice of 2 teachers in active service, 2 scientific education experts and an adviser, the distinction of leader style and research participation students was decided on.
It was composed of a total of 8 groups, with leaders of inclusive, persuasive, and alienating styles each having 2 heterogeneous groups, from the point of recognition level, respectively, and a group with no clear leader having 2 homogeneous groups from the point of recognition level. The verbal interaction of each group was simultaneously recorded on an MP3, recorder for language and a video camera. The peculiar contents were also recorded in an observation-recording diary while observing the students and the recorded data was transcribed.
Analysis of their verbal interaction in the MBL experiment class showed that they had verbal interaction an average of 311 times during the first experiment. And the verbal interactions related and unrelated to learning contents were relatively low ,294 and 17 times, respectively. It showed that the verbal interactions of recognitional and definitional side related to the learning contents were 236 (75.7%) and 58 times (18.7%), respectively. Consequently, the off-task or unrelated to class interaction was small, and many of the interactions were in the recognitional side related to the MBL experiment class.
The analysis of total frequencies of verbal interaction revealed that the group with an inclusive leader style showed the highest frequency of verbal interaction, followed by the group with a persuasive leader, an alienating leader and lastly, the group with no clear leader.
The group with an inclusive leader showed the highest frequency of interaction from a cognitive aspect related to question (Q), response (R), making suggestion (MS), and receiving opinions (RO), while interactions from an affective aspect related to behavioral participation (BP) and students' attitudes (SA) were observed more often in a group including an alienating leader than in any other group. An analysis of characteristics of verbal interaction according to leader style showed that a group with an inclusive leader had a permissive atmosphere. It also showed that all members of the group actively participated in discussion and they had a sense of belonging and self-pride within their group. In a group with a persuasive leader, the leader took the lead of most experimental and discussion activities and he was rarely challenged by other students in the group. Rather, other group members showed a tendency to depend on their leader. In a group with an alienating leader, the relationship between leader and members of the group was not harmonious and unfiltered expressions of dissatisfaction and ignorance often took place. The leader's lack of concern about members' low achievement became an obstacle in active discussion. In a group with no clear leader, most interactions during discussion were short and simple. Many answers to the question given by their members were not clear and the interactions were sometimes interrupted for a short while.
Post-examination of scholastic achievement by group according to the leader style (Duncan) showed that groups with leaders of inclusive and persuasive styles were higher than groups with leaders of alienating style and groups with no clear leader in post-examination of scholastic achievement. There was a significant difference in the science process skills by group before and after the MBL experiment class for groups with leaders of inclusive style, while there was no significant difference for groups with leaders of persuasive style. The average of science process skills was very slightly increased for groups with leaders of alienating style and group with no clear leader after MBL experiment class, but there was no significant difference in the science process skills for the groups.
