In our old proverbs, what is learnt in the cradle is carried to the tomb and if one sees children, then one knows their parent. These proverbs clearly indicate the magnitude of parent’s influence during the growth and development of a human being.
With assumption that a parent’s negative attitude results from lack of information and understanding about their children, parent’s commanding type conversation and lack of conversation technique, ‘STEP’ program which has shown to be effective from the previous study were carried out mainly with 7 couples of parent in S kid education institution located in Seoul. The purpose of this study was to recognize the necessity of more positive, parent education by elucidating that various parenting attitudes of parent can be altered by parent education.
Detailed questions to achieve the goal of this study are as follows.
1. Is there any change in parenting attitude of parents participating in the STEP parent education program?
2. Does detail action for improvement of relationship between a parent and their children change as participation progresses and is there a difference between parents?
3. Does it affect the marital relation of parents participating in the STEP parental education program and alteration of children's behavior?
1) Recognition of the problem in fostering children
2) Alteration of attitude that morally treats the children
3) Skill of communication
4) Understanding the children
5) Alteration of children originated by that of parents
6) Coincidence in the couple's fostering attitude
7) Positive alteration of the marital relation between couple
The subjects of this study were 7 parents those who never missed the eight-week program for any reason among 12 parents those who participated in the parent education program of S kindergarten located in Gaebong-dong, Guro-gu, Seoul.
Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) program designed by Dinkmeyer and Mckay based on Adler’s theory was used as a research tool.
Parenting attitude tests were performed before and after the program to find out change in parenting attitude of parents by receiving the STEP program. A questionnaire of MBRI modified and translated by Lee, Wonyoung (1983) and later, modified again by Choi, Yukeong (1998) was used as parenting attitude test material. In addition, as a method of quantitative study, I utilized the process of ‘open-ended coding - continuous comparison analysis - formation of main subject’, a model of a quantitative study method used in [Quantitative study on the effects of APT parent education program and development direction of harvesting program] by Kim, Yeongsuk (2003).
Both quantitative and qualitative study methods were carried out in this study in order to process the collected data. For quantitative study, frequency analysis and t-test were performed with SPSS/PC 12.0, and for qualitative study, direct afterward open-ended questionnaires and opinions were collected and analyzed.
The results of this study were as followed.
First, There was no statistically significant difference in parenting attitude change of parents participating in STEP parent education program. However, in case of mother, there was a significant difference in their controlling attitude after the program. The analysis of afterward questionnaires and opinions revealed that there was in fact a significant difference before and after the program.
Second, Although there was a little variation in detailed action change for improvement of parent and children relationship depending on the length of program participation, most parents showed a change at the 8th period rather than the 1st period.
Third, with respect to the influence on the marital relation of parents participating in the STEP parental education program and alteration of children's behavior, it was observed that the children changed positively by treating them morally through comprehension of them and skill of communication; the conflict existing in the marital relation owing to inconsistency of fostering attitude was solved and the relation became positive thanks to increasing conversation.
