This research has been conducted with ‘Yeollyeojeon(烈女傳)’ volumes recorded in ‘Munjipsojaejeonjakpumjeonjip(文集所在傳作品全集)’ and ‘Yeollyeojeon of Korea(韓國의 烈女傳)’, in odder to study the aspects of types of 'Yeollyeojeon' in the later period of Chosun dynasty and their meaning. The result is conclusively summarized is as follows.
First, the sources for writing 'Yeollyeojeon' are divided into two categories of social aspects and literary ones.
Second, the aspects of types of 'Yeollyeojeon' in the later period of Chosun dynasty are analyzed in historical and synchronic methods. 'Chosun Yeollyeojeon(朝鮮烈女傳)' is categorized into 6 types according to heroine actions; 'Sujeolhyeong(守節型), Julsahyeong(節死型), Sunjeolhyeong(殉節型), Mohaehyeong(謀害型), Boksuhyeong(復讐型’) and 'Heonsinhyeong(獻身型). The developing stage of 'Yeollyeojeon' is divided into the earlier period and the later period of Chosun, and the later period is divided again into three periods, 1st period is from 'Imlan(壬亂) to 18Century', 2nd is '19Century' and 3rd is 'Guhanmal(舊韓末)'. According to the current of each period, the aspects of types of 'Yeollyeojeon' and their meaning are examined, analyzed, and carefully studied in order to look over the emergence of the transfigured 6 types. And those results are put into the form of a diagram in figure 2.
Third, the transfigured aspects of 'Yeollyeojeon' is clarified as follows according to the plot. 'Yeollyeojeons' in the later period of Chosun dynasty have the plot that never appeared in the earlier period, such as 'Byeongyeok Yeollyeojeon', a mixed plot, comment section, and opening words. And those are the distinct peculiarities of 'Yeollyeojeon' in the later period of Chosun dynasty's.
Forth, the transfigured 'Yeollyeojeon' is clarified as follows. 'Yeollyeojeon' of Chosun dynasty is classified into 6 types which appeared and disappeared according to the periods. And transfigured aspects are considered by the frequency of the ‘Yeollyeojeons’ which correspond to each types. As a result, it is shown that only 'Sujeolhyeong Yeollyeojeon' had been written and inherited from the early Chosun dynasty to the end of Daehanjeguk(大韓帝國). The rest 5 types had distinctively appeared for some time. Therefore it is proved that 'Sujeolhyeong Yeollyeojeon' kept the tradition of the Korean ‘Yeollyeojeon’. And it is the only type that transmitted the heritage. It appeared in the heyday of the latter period of Chosun dynasty for the first time, and produced the largest number of heroines. So it could be considered that 'Sunjeolhyeong Yeollyeojeon' was the most vigorously created type of 'Yeollyeojeon'.
Fifth, through the examination of the meaning of the transfigured aspects of 'Yeollyeojeon', it is clarified like this. 'Byeongyeok Yeollyeojeon' which appeared in the later period of Chosun dynasty, is divided into two types, 'Hwakdae Byeongyeok Yeollyeojeon(擴大變格烈女傳)' with 5 paragraphs and 'Chukso Byeongyeok Yeollyeojeon(縮小變格烈女傳)' with 3 paragraphs. And 'Yeollyeojeon' whit a mixed plot was usually changed from biography to a fiction and showed the figure of positive and progressive woman. The heroin actions at that time were emphasized for the purpose of making our culture better than that of Japan or Western. And the moral power of 'Yeollyeojeon' was used as a castigatory resource which protected the external aggression. It is considered that the literary men at that time, spread with negative viewpoints of serving only a single husband and of ‘Jeonglyeo’(旌閭) system, were exactly forerunners with modern character.
