Introduction:
This study was conducted to compare according to the two kinds of methods of offering information during cancer surgery on the family needs satisfaction and state anxiety at the university hospital in Daegu, Korea.
Materials & Methods
The data were collected from 80 subjects. Forty subjects were assigned to be served informational intervention directly. Forty were assigned to be served text message informational intervention that was transferred from a computer program to cellular phone of patient's family by perioperative RN. Data were collected during 15th January to 25th March, 2006. The research instrument consisted of three categories(after skin incision, after specimen out, after returning to recovering room). The outcome variables were the level of the state anxiety with Spielberger's state anxiety scale, and nursing needs of patients' families with Perioperative Family Needs Questionnaire(PFNQ).
The experimental design used for this study was a non-equivalent control group with a post test design. The data obtained were analyzed by X2 - test and t - test.
Result:
The major findings of this study were summarized as follows
1. There was no significant difference of the level of perioperative family needs satisfaction between the group which nurses offer the perioperative information group and the text message group(P>0.05).
2. There was no significant difference of the level of state anxiety in offering informational intervention between the direc tperioperative information group and the text message group(P>0.05).
Conclusion:
Based upon the above finding, it seemed that the nursing intervention with cellular phone short message service is as effective as direct perioperative information in reducing the level of state anxiety and in increasing of the level of nursing needs satisfaction of the patients' families.
