With the rapid spread of the internet, tourists have come to analyze various internet travel product information on their own and select the best web sites related to travel.
The purpose of this study is to develop extended technology acceptance model in customers internet travel products purchasing intentions, and test it empirically using field survey. To achieve this purpose, various models have been proposed as a theoretical foundation for understanding the user acceptance process of information technology including Theory of Reasoned Action(TRA), Theory of Planned Behavior(TPB), Triandis Model, Innovation Diffusion Model(IDM), and Technology Acceptance Model(TAM). Among these models, TAM, introduced by Davis(1986) is the best known and the most widely accepted in the Management Information System(MIS) and Information Technology(IT) literature. To define the customers' technology acceptance factors for the travel relative internet sites, researchers use TAM as a useful model to analyze the acceptance process of new technologies. Most of the data were collected from the office workers and college students. 425 surveys were analyzed for this study. Eleven out of eighteen hypotheses were supported.
The results can be summarized by two parts of variables which were antecedents of customer's purchasing intention and external customer characteristic variables. First, This study identifies perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and perceived risk as the determinants of attitude and purchasing intention to use empirically investigate their relationships. Perceived ease of use has significant effects on perceived usefulness, perceived risk, and attitude. Also, perceived usefulness and perceived risk have significant effects on attitude. However, they have no direct effects on the purchasing intentions. Seconds, this study identifies self-innovation, cognitive absorption, internet self-efficacy as external customer characteristic variables of the TAM. Self-innovation and cognitive absorption have partial effect on perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and perceived risk. However, Internet self-efficacy has no effect on the perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and perceived risk.
This study contributes to the introduction of TAM from the IT industry fields to the E-Commerce in the travel industry sector. Also, this study shows the customer's psychological characteristics about new technology acceptance before a customer tries to purchase internet travel products. Furthermore, this study introduces that the perceived risk is one of the most important motivational variables. The internet travel product providers should solve security problems to promote internet sales and to reduce a customer's feeling of insecurity during the transaction.
