The purpose of this study is to prove the effect of rose aroma essential oil on middle aged women's relaxation and brain wave activity when it is used for abdominal massage.
The research was designed to compare the differential treatment effects between the experimental group which received rose oil massage and the control group which received base jojoba oil massage. The participants were seventeen middle aged women from thirty seven to fifty one years of age who were residing in S city.
The current study was carried out from October to November 2006. The research instrument applied to investigate relaxation effect was fifty-item stress level survey which was devised by Murakama Masato and Norioka Takacoga in Japan. In terms of brain wave measurement, and brain waves were measured by using the 2 Channel system portable brain wave measuring instrument which was invented by Korea Research Institute of Jungshin Science.
Participants received abdominal massage for 10 times for fifteen minutes, using rose oil or base oil depending on their assigned group. The difference between experimental group (rose oil) and control group (base oil) was compared both before and after the treatment.
For data analysis, demographic information of the participants was analyzed with one-way ANOVA. The null hypothesis was tested using Willcoxon signed rank test -nonpa rametric test and the paired t test.
The results were as follows: 1. Hypothesis 1: “The experimental group’s score on the stress level survey will significantly decrease in comparison to the control group after the massage.” Both groups showed significantly increased relaxing effect as they received more abdominal massage (experimental group z=-2.807, p<.05, control group z=-2.099, p<.05). However, the first hypothesis was rejected since there was no significant difference between the two groups.
2. Hypothesis 2: “Among the experimental group’s Brain Quotient, stress index will be scored significantly lower than the control group after the massage.” The second hypothesis was supported (left hemisphere: Z=-2497, p<.05, right hemisphere: Z=-2859, p<.05).
3. Hypothesis 3: “Among the experimental group’s Brain Quotient, the emotional index score will be significantly higher than the control group after the treatment.” The third hypothesis was supported (Z=-2,701, p<.05).
4. Hypothesis 4: “The experimental group’s wave will be significantly higher than the control group after the massage.” The fourth hypothesis was substantiated (before: t=2.759, p<.05, after: t=6.223, p<.05).
5. Hypothesis 5: “The experimental group’s brain wave which is related to sleep will significantly increase more than the control group after the treatment.” The fifth hypothesis was supported (before: t=2.379, p<.05, after t=2.791, p<.05).
6. Hypothesis 6: “The experimental group’s brain wave will significantly more increase than the control group after the massage.” The hypothesis 6 was substantiated (before: t=2.827, p=0.059, after: t=2.159, p<.05) In conclusion, in this study, abdominal massage using rose aroma essential oil was proved to have anti-stress effect and relaxing effect through emotional stabilization for middle aged women. The findings substantiated its effectiveness for activating and brain waves which are related to sleep and increasing brain wave which induces relaxation and composure. As a result, abdominal massage using rose aroma essential oil is an effective treatment of relaxation for middle aged women and for the increase of relaxing and sleep-related brain wave activity.
