Thus, the subject of this research are follows.
First, what is the relation between mothers' attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness between children's emotional intelligence?
Second, what is the relation between mothers' attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness between children's peer competence?
Third, what is the relation between children's emotional intelligence and children's peer competence?
Fourth, what is the explain power of mothers' attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness on both children's emotional intelligence and children's peer competence?
For analysis of this research, the study used 230 pieces of material from 230 children of age 4 and 5, as many mothers, 30 teachers in 10 nurseries and 5 preschools in Seoul.
To measure mothers' understanding attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness, the research used an adaptation version of Saarni's PACES(Parent Attitude toward Children's Expressiveness Scale, 1990) which was adapted by Ji-seon Lee(2002) to fit ages and other characteristics of subjects. In order to estimate children's emotional intelligence, the children's EQ(Emotional Quotient) Measurement & Evaluation system for teachers of Gyeonghee Kim(1999) was used which was based on the concept model of emotional intelligence adapted by Salovey and Mayer(1996). For measurement of children's peer competence, the peer competence measurement system developed by Juhee Park․Eunhae Lee(2001) was employed.
Data process was done by SPSS12.0 for Windows, demographic characteristics of this research subjects were detected under frequency analysis, and Cronbach α coefficient was calculated for credibility verification of standards of children's emotional intelligence and peer competence. In addition, a correlation analysis was made to figure out the relationship of mothers' understanding attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness, children's emotional intelligence and children's peer competence. The study employed multiple regression analysis to understand the effect of mothers' understanding attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness on children's emotional intelligence and children's peer competence, and carried out path analysis to judge the explain power of mothers' understanding attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness on children's emotional intelligence and children's peer competence.
The results of the research are as follows.
First, in the effect of mothers' understanding attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness on children's emotional intelligence, in case that mothers' understanding attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness is receptive and permissive, there are high mutual relations with utilization of self emotion as a sub-element of children's emotional intelligence, recognition and consideration of other emotion, recognition and consideration of self emotion, emotion control, impulse suppression, interaction with teachers, interaction with peer group.
Second, in the effect of mothers' understanding attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness on children's peer competence, in case that mothers' understanding attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness is receptive and permissive, there are high mutual relations with sociality, society-friendliness, and leadership as sub-elements of children's peer competence. At this time we can learn that the receptive and permissive mothers' understanding attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness on children's peer competence plays a greatest variable in children's society-friendliness of peer group.
Third, the relation between children's emotion intelligence and peer competence had significantly positive correlation. The strongest variables to explain children's peer competence were recognition and consideration of other emotion and the relation with peer group in children's emotional intelligence. This means that children's peer competence grows higher as they frequently use the skills of relation with peer group.
Fourth, mothers' understanding attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness on children's peer competence has effects on such sub-areas of children's emotion intelligence as the use of emotion, recognition and consideration of other emotion, recognition and expressiveness of self emotion, emotion control and impulse suppression, interaction with teachers, interaction with peer group as well as children's emotion intelligence has effects on such sub-areas of children's peer competence as sociality, society-friendliness, and leadership. That is, mothers' understanding attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness on children's peer competence has direct effects on children's emotion intelligence, but indirect effects on children's peer competence rather than direct effects.
