This study analyzed the relationship between optimism and carrer maturity targeting middle school students. The purpose of this study was to examine which relationship optimism and career maturity have and what about the explanatory power between sub-dimensions. From the result, the basic materials could be provided for the future counseling by developing student's career counseling program and furthermore it can give an educational suggestion for effective career guide.
To carry out purpose of this study, I selected several subjects. firstly, Had optimism of middle school students differences according to gender, grade, academic achievement and social economic status? secondly, Had career maturity of middle school students differences according to gender, grade, academic achievement and social economic status? thirdly, which relationship had middle school student's optimism and career maturity.
For this, in the study subjects were 484 junior and senior in D middle school and S middle school in Seoul. Revised Life Orientation Test; LOT-R developed by Scheier, Carver and Bridges(1994) was used as a measurement instrument for career maturity. For measuring career maturity, 70 items in 5 sub-dimensions developed by Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education & Training(2001) were used.
Result of study was analyzed SPSS WIN 12.0 program. To search the difference of maturity according to middle school student's gender, grade, academic achievement and social economic status, it conducted T-test and one-way ANOVA. Aiming to analyze the difference of career maturity according to gender, grade, academic achievement and social economic status, it conducted T-test.
First, as a result of analyzing the relationship between optimism and career maturity depending on gender, a significant difference was indicated both in optimism and career maturity especially female students were higher than male students. There were few differences depending on the grade. optimism was indicated that high academic achievement group was higher than other groups. But these differences were not significant.
Second, middle school student's career maturity had a significant difference according to gender, academic achievement and social economic status. Career maturity was indicated that female students were higher than male students, high social economic status groups were higher than low social economic status groups, higher academic achievement groups were higher than low academic achievement groups. In career maturity depending on the level of grade senior was higher than Junior. But this showed no significant difference.
Third, in the relationship between optimism and career maturity it was identified that if optimism was higher, career maturity was also higher. In sub-measurement of career maturity, attitude factor had more something to do with optimism than ability factor. In sub-measurement of optimism and career maturity, there was closely related ability of plan. Attitude and independence had related to optimism and career maturity. In sub-measurement of optimism and career maturity self-understanding was more something to do with than ability of information and decision of career.
Given summing up results that were clarified in this study those are as follows.
Middle school student's academic achievement, social economic status and gender had close relationship in optimism. Thus, optimistic estimation about their own academic achievement and social economic status was important in effective self-expression. And middle school student's gender, academic achievement, social economic status were had close relationship in career maturity. Those were showed that optimistic estimation is very important in adaptation in school and student's career.
In relationship of middle school student's optimism and career maturity, this relationship was direct proposition. Attitude and ability of plan were important factor. As a result of explaning the relationship between optimism and career maturity, it was indicated that optimism had an important effect on not only the decrease of depression, the effective management of stress, the increase of happiness, the efficiency of human relationship but also ability of plan, attitude, independence, self-understanding, practical use of information and decision of career.
Therefore to improve middle school student's career maturity, optimistic self-esteem is base. For this, teachers should offer careful and constant guidance about student.
