The purpose of this study is to examine the influences on the prosocial behavior, perception and attitude to the disability by young children without disabilities, and on the social interaction between young children with and without disabilities on the basis on the literature approach activity used picture books in an inclusive setting.
For this purpose, the proposed questions are as follows;
1. What are the effects of the literature approach activity used picture books on the prosocial behavior of young children without disabilities in an inclusive setting.
2. What are the effects of the literature approach activity used picture books on the perception and attitude to the disability of young children without disabilities in an inclusive setting.
3. What are the effects of the literature approach activity used picture books on the social interaction between young children with and without disabilities in an inclusive setting.
4. What are the factors of the effects on the social interaction between young children with and without disabilities in an inclusive setting.
The subjects in this study were 2 classes of young children of 5 years old at the national and public inclusive day care center in Seoul. And the number of subjects in respectively 2 classes were 8 children with disabilities and 35 children without disabilities.
The literature approach activity used picture book has been carried out in the inclusive classroom for 12 weeks from March 28th till June 16th.
Before and after the intervention, the prosocial behavior, perception and attitude to the disability by young children without disabilities were tested for this study.
During the period of intervention, the social interactions between young children with and without disabilities at the time of their free play have been observed by means of video tape. There were diverse interviews with teachers about the intervention activities and the social interaction between young children with and without disabilities in the classroom in order to get additional data.
The quantitative data were analyzed with mean, standard deviation, frequency and t-test, and the observational data for the social interaction between young children with and without disabilities were analyzed with qualitative research method, too.
The results of this study are as follows:
Literature approach activity used picture books had a positive effect on the prosocial behavior of young children without disabilities in an inclusive setting. Literature approach activity had a positive effect on the perception and attitude to the disability of young children without disabilities in an inclusive setting. In case of the sub-factor analysis, the perception to the disabilities of young children without disabilities and their intention of interaction with those without disabilities showed the positive effects. Literature approach activity had a positive effect on the social interaction between young children with and without disabilities in an inclusive setting. From the results of analysis on children's free play, it can be found that the behaviors of problem-making by young children with disabilities, the character of those without disabilities and the educational intervention by teachers had an important effect on the social interaction between young children with and without disabilities in an inclusive setting.
