This thesis aims at analyzing their stress and coping style in the Korean pastor's wives by comparison to the lay married women. 42 pastor's wives and 118 lay married women in Daejon and Choongnam were included in the data collection process. In order to measure their level of stress, scores of the Index of Clinical Stress by Walter W. Hudson & Neil Abel(1992) were obtained for their psychological stress and scores of the Family Inventory of Life Events and Changes by McCubbin, Patterson, & Wilson(1983) were obtained for their family stress. Their coping style was measured with the Ways of Coping Checklist that had been translated and revised by Kim and Lee (1985) based on their factor analysis of the questionnaire developed by Folkman and Lazarus (1985).
T-test was appplied to examining the relationships of family stress, psychological stress, and coping style between the two groups. ANOVA was applied to analyzing the differences in each group. In addition, Duncan's post analysis was applied.
There were following results. First, pastor's wives got their psychological stress and family stress less than the lay married women. However, the differences were not significant.
Second, the pastor's wives whose monthly house income was less than 1,000,000 won perceived psychological stress and family stress more than the lay married women whose monthly house income was less than 1,000,000 won. The pastor's wives whose monthly house income was more than 1,000,000 won got psychological stress and family stress significantly less than those whose income was less than 1,000,000 won.
Third, the pastor's wives employed the wishful thought coping, problem focused coping, and seek social support coping more than the lay married women. The pastor's wives preferred the emotion focused coping less than the lay married women. The differences were significant.
Fourth, the coping style that the pastor's wives preferred most was the wishful thought coping. The problem focused coping was the second. The younger they were, the more wishful thought coping, problem focused coping, and seek social support coping they preferred. However, the lay married women younger than 40 years old preferred the problem focused coping the most. The wishful thought coping was the second. The emotion focused coping was the third. The lay married women older than 40 years old preferred the wishful thought the most. The differences, however, were not significant.
Fifth, the pastor's wives preferred the wishful thought coping the more, the less their house incomes were. The less their house incomes were, the more they employed the coping. The lay married women, however, employed the coping the less, the less their house incomes were.
