Many people today have an increasing attention to their beauty and appearance as they have higher living standards. This increasing desire for beauty has reconstructed the beauty-related industry more professional and special field. In particular, the hair beauty is one of the promising subsectors of current beauty industries. Hairstyling, an important factor influencing physical appearance, has been regarded as one of the standard expressions for beauty, intelligence as well as social status. Traditionally the old concept of ‘hairstyling’ was just focusing on ‘good-looking’ strategies and related technology developments. However, the new concept emphasizes ‘natural and healthy scalp and hair skincare’ rather than artificial hair beauty. To meet this new trend in the hair beauty industry, other healthy business fields, such as dermatology clinics and oriental medicine clinics, have been actively involved in the scalp and hair skincare beauty industry by developing unique programs based on their specialty.
Even though the number of these hair-related programs is dramatically expanding nationwide, there are very few reports available on systematic approaches for developing curriculums for employees in this new concept-based beauty industry, management strategies in general and clients’ satisfaction.
Therefore, the aim of this study is to systematically examine the current state of the scalp and hair skincare industry and clients’ satisfactionin in order to help the beauty industry in Korea.
The survey data were collected from 288 female or male adults, aged 10~50, who had at least one service in scalp and hair skincare in shops or salons. Analyses reveal that clients questioned want reasonable service fees 36.5%, well-designed programs 30.9%, employees’professionalism, 19.4% and others such as hygiene and comfatable atmosphere of the shop.
These findings suggest that even though many hair care programs are currently being developed and run independently, integrated and multidisciplinary programs should be designed and developed to meet clients’ increasing demand for high quality of services and to standardize the service quality and education for employees.
