This thesis is a single-subject experimental research to examine the effectiveness of traditional nursery rhyme plays on ADHD children's interpersonal negotiation strategies.
The subjects of this research are 4 children with ADHD at an elementary school in Daegu. They had been applied to with the traditional rhyme play program twice a week from 8 August to 15 July, 2006, 20 times in total.
The tool for the pre- and post-test was the Interpersonal Relation Scale developed by Beardslee, Schultz, Selman(1987), which was translated by Hyuk-Sun Kwon(1988). The pre- and post-test was conducted with a five-point Likert scale, and the changes had been analyzed on the percentage basis. In addition, a qualitative analysis had been performed for the changes of interpersonal behavior of the subject children.
The conclusion derived from the result of this study were as follows ;
First, the traditional nursery rhyme play is effective to improve ADHD children's impulsive and physical interpersonal negotiation strategies.
Second, the traditional nursery rhyme play is effective to improve ADHD children's one-way interpersonal negotiation strategies, which encourage them to observe the commands or asking by the person in charge.
Third, the traditional nursery rhyme play is effective to improve ADHD children's reciprocal interpersonal negotiation strategies as well as their self-understanding. It helps them understand that others are different from them.
Forth, the traditional nursery rhyme play is effective to improve ADHD children's cooperative interpersonal negotiation strategies.
Fifth, the traditional nursery rhyme play is effective for ADHD children's term-based, step-by-step change.
Playing with traditional nursery rhymes, as a type of group work with a lot of physical movement, may discourage ADHD children's aggressiveness by offering them chances to satisfy their desires. Being easy to play, it can also give them chances to play with other normal children and develop social skills; ADHD children become conscious of others' responses and try to get positive responses from peers. Playing with traditional nursery rhymes, therefore, can be acknowledged as a useful program helping ADHD children develop a positive interpersonal relationship.
