This study investigates into the changing world of experience of children through the project approach process, with subjects of natural matters included within nature experiencing activities.
In the study, relevant data and results were collected from participating in a 9-month observation of 28 4-year-old children, who are attending a J kindergarten in Daejeon city. Through such process, following research questions were attained.
1. How dose the learning motive of children change in the process of the project approach that use natural materials employed in their experiencing nature?
2. How dose the inquiring and expression of children change in the process of the project approach that use natural materials employed in their experiencing nature?
3. How dose the emotional attitude of children change in the process of the project approach that use natural materials employed in their experiencing nature?
The results of the study were as follows.
First, The process of the project approach through experiencing nature first and foremost takes 'natural things' into subject matter. The characteristic and charm of such 'natural things' stimulates the desire to learn in children, inspiring them to learn and experience with a spontaneous and interested attitude. In addition, through the process of investigating and expressing a single natural material intensively, children were able to specifically express their curiosity, which had been vague and elementary until now. This process further enables them to maintain their focus for a long period of time, becoming engrossed in topical investigation and expressive learning.
Second, In addition to directly experiencing nature, the project approach which adopts a variety of media and activities has strengthened the children's ability to learn and express themselves. The more hours the children spent in nature the more they themselves became curious and attentive to nature. However, there were some instances where such interest merely ended in a transient and momentary one. Therefore in order for the project approach to maintain children's interest and enable them to learn and express on their own, experiencing of nature needs to be an activity which can promote a deeper investigation and expressive abilities of children. Here, investigation and expressive process through language and symbols became an important medium for expanding cognition and stimulating expression of children. Third, The process of the project approach through natural experience motivates children to 'know' new things in nature, as well as fosters children's inter-relationship with peer groups, strengthening their emotional attitude to voluntarily care for nature. Through becoming familiar with a single piece of nature, the children began learning about nature in general, and through learning new things they also attained pleasure. Such pleasure of learning continued to be an important motive during the entire natural experiencing process, as well as a result of the project approach. As described above, the process of learning through natural experience presented pleasure and self-confidence to children, and such emotional satisfaction increased through their interaction with peer groups. Ultimately, the children were finding ways to live in harmony with 'Nature.'
