The present study examined whether a play?]based cognitive restructuring program would improve broken family children?fs self?]perception. Subjects of this study were 4 children in experimental group and 3 in control group who were selected from 3rd~4th?]grade students who experienced broken family and were most sensitive to broken family based on the results of self?]perception test and the opinions of the class teachers and the social worker. The program was administered twice a week and a total of 12 sessions, focusing on the five steps of cognitive restructuring, modeling, role play, self-inspection, reinforcement and the therapeutic factors of play such as emotional purification, insight and self-control. Each session was composed of task confirmation (5minutes), relaxing activity (10minutes), structuring activity (30minutes) and discussion (15minutes). Changes in broken family children?fs self?]perception were measured by comparing the results of self?]perception tests before, during and after the program, and changes in children?fs Self?]perception in each session were examined using a session evaluation chart.
The results of this study are as follows : The play?]based cognitive restructuring program brought about positive changes in children self?]perception (schoolwork, society, body, exercise, behavior, and general self?]worth). In addition, over the sessions, children came to accept a positive view of themselves and showed improvement in their self?]worth and sense of accomplishment.
The results suggest that a play?]centered cognitive restructuring program is effective in improving broken family children?fs self?]perception.
