This study determined whether a play?]based self?]control training program would improve self?]control and reduce maladjustment behavior in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Participants of this study were 4, 2?] or 3?]grade male children who had been found to have ADHD, had been receiving drug treatment for over six months, scored 16 point or higher in Connors?f Scale for parents, and were classified as composite type in DSM-?W (APA, 1994) diagnosis standard. The program was administered twice a week, a total of 12 sessions and 60 minutes per session, focusing on cognitive behavioral strategies such as self-teaching method, modeling, reward for response and reinforcement and the therapeutic factors of play such as motivation, insight and purification. To examine the effects of the program on self?]control and maladjustment behavior, we asked the parents and teachers to evaluate children's self?]control on the self?]control rating scale (SCRS) before and after each session, and two observers counted the frequency of maladjustment behavior by examining at intervals of 30 seconds (10 seconds?f observation and 20 seconds?f recording) the videotape which recorded the children's free play situation for 20 minutes. In addition, to examine changes in impulsiveness, we performed the matching familiar figure test (MFFT) before and after each session and compared the results turned out that the play?]based self?]control training program improved the ADHD children?fs self?]control, and reduced the ADHD children?fs maladjustment behaviors (inattention, impulsiveness and hyperactivity).
There results suggest that a play?]based self?]control training program is effective in improving ADHD children?fs self?]control and reducing their maladjustment behaviors.
