This study has applied to verify an effectiveness of the Mandara art therapy to the abused children's depression. To decrease child's depression which appeared to the child because of parent's physical abuse, mental abuse, and nonintervention, this study consisted newly Mandara art therapy and looked into the effectiveness to the abused children's depression.
The study participants were two children who were reported to child abuse prevention center and showed suppressed verbal and emotional expression in depressive mood. These two children have taken individual art therapy total of 17 session: 40 minutes a session, once a week, from December 2005 to April 2006 at the clinic in the child abuse prevention center in the city of Busan.
The test methods were the One-Dimension Scale which was revised and standardized by Jo, Soochul and Lee, Youngsik from the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) (Kovavas, 1983), and the Draw-A-Story (DAS) (Silver, 1988,1993) which child choose two images from 14 and then draw using the images and talk about their drawings.
The study data have been compared and explained by the early stage, the middle stage, the close stage based on each session. In addition, changed results of pretest and posttest were illustrated as a diagram and graph that showed result of the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) and the Draw-A-Story (DAS).
The followings were the study results:
First, Mandara art therapy brought positive changes in depressive behavior characters such as reduced social activity, exercise, eye contact, prosaic emotion in the every session's activities.
Second, Mandara art therapy have found positive effects on the therapeutic changes when depression assessment has been examined. The pretest and posttest scores of the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) and the Draw-A-Story (DAS) have been changed.
From the results, several facts can be identified that the Mandara art therapy to the abused children has positive effects. Also the Mandara art therapy makes possible that the abused children can radiate their feelings and express by themselves, therefore, Mandara art therapy affects positively to the child's depression.
