    The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of Montessori daily living excercise program for improving basic life habit formation of children with mental retardation and use it as life guidance materials to the exceptional children.
    To attain the purpose of this study, this study was selected 40 children in total, boys and girls with mental age of 4 and 5 years, respectively who attend special schools for the mentally retarded in Daegu city.
    As for a method for the study, Montessori program of daily life was used for experiment and evaluation of basic life habit of an adult developed by National Assessment of Educational Progress was taken to perform pre and post hoc test to observe the effect on manners, order, cleanness and self-restraint.
    The conclusions of the study are as follows;
    First, Montessori's daily Living program have a positive effect on forming manners. It shows effects in bowing to the elder politely, greeting with friends and expressing thanks when they receive a present from the elder.
    Second, Montessori's daily Living program haves a positive effect on building orders of mentally retarded children. It shows that the ability to follow instructions to walk in the corridor and stairs, tie shoes right and replace a chair after use was enhanced to normal level.
    Third, Montessori's daily Living program have a significant effect in forming cleanness of mentally retarded children. It shows enhancement in stop biting nails, handling nose drippings or saliva and washing hands.
    Fourth, Montessori's daily Living program have a positively affects in self-restraint of mentally retarded children. It's effective in avoiding interrupting other friends when they're playing, desiring for other's belongings and keeping time for arrangement.
    Therefore, this study propose some prospective research subjects and directions to utilize Montessori's daily Living program in the field of life guidance in special education.
    First, more definite following researches to designate and analyze experiment and control groups are required to derive research results according to various variables.
    Second, as the time for experiment was too short with limitation in selecting teaching aids and post hoc test was carried out immediately after finishing the experiment, following researches are required to verify the effects of Montessori's daily Living program on forming basic life habit of mentally retarded children.
    Third, continuous future researches are required as studies applied to mentally retarded children is insufficient in spite of many for the infant.
