This thesis is to research the effect of art activities onto motor cooperative skill of mentally retarded students, and the purpose of this thesis is to reveal the effect of art activity onto stable cooperative skill, hand motion cooperative skill, and general motion cooperative skill of mentally retarded students.
Subjects are 30 boys and girls in the 4th grade, elementary department, B special school, Daemyeong-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu Metropolitan City. Both experimental group and control group had 15 subjects randomly. After having Oseretsky Motor Skill Test to the students, art activity program was done and adapted to experimental group, and ordinary study method was done to the control group, and post-test was done. As for data treatment, t-test was done to verify the difference of motor cooperative skill between experimental group and control group according to the purpose of this thesis, and results were gotten as follows;
First, art activity gives positive effect onto stable cooperative skill of the mentally retarded students. It means that scheduled and continuous education and training are in need about art activity for stable cooperative skill of mentally retarded students.
Second, art activity gives positive effect onto hand motion cooperative skill of the mentally retarded students. Especially, it shows the highest improve among the three sub-factors, and it means that art activity mainly for hand muscle activity including line drawing, paper cutting, paper folding is most in need to improve their hand motion cooperative skill.
Third, art activity gives positive effect onto their general motion cooperative skill. It means that art activity was effective for general motion cooperative skill for them.
Thus, the study activity through art activity is effective to improve their motor cooperative ability.
On the basis of this study, I'd like to suggest several things for future studies as below;
First, it is not easy to generalize this study, because this study was done only with 30 mentally retarded students. Thus, it requires following study to reveal that art activity is effective to various level of mentally retarded students.
Second, it is difficult to examine the improvement of motor cooperative skill with adaption of the program in short term. Thus, it requires following study to reveal the effect onto the motor skill, by adaption of art activity program with design for long terms of treatment.
Third, since the subjects were in their high grade in elementary department, it was difficult to show more distinctive improvement than that of younger students. Thus, it requires following study to analyze developmental degree of their motor skill, dividing them according to their age and handicapped degree.
Fourth, the art activity was found effective for motor cooperative skill, and I believe that their motor cooperative skill can be improved through other study activities.
