An attempt was made to change maladjustment behaviors of children with developmental delay by practising physical contact‐centered group play so that they can experience pleasure in associating with others, and make relation with others. Subjects of this study were 3 children with developmental delay diagnosed as 2nd‐grade developmental disability at the Department of Psychiatry for Children. They showed slow cognitive or general development and had secondary emotional and behavioral problems caused by the developmental delay. Physical contact‐centered group play was exercised for 9 weeks from the 6th of March to the 4th of May 2006, 3~4 times per week, 45 minutes per sessions, and a total of 16 sessions.
Each participant's isolated behavior, wandering behavior, and avoiding behavior were analyzed in each session, and compared changes under preliminary free play situation with changes under free play situation during the play therapy sessions, and recorded changes in maladjustment behaviors during the play therapy sessions.
The results showed that physical contact‐centered group play reduced isolated behaviors, wandering behaviors, and avoiding behaviors in the children with developmental delay.
These results support that physical contact‐centered group play is effective in reducing maladjustment behaviors in children with developmental delay.
