This is study explored how a play-based cognitive behavior program affects was children’s aggression. Participants of this study were 4 first-grade elementry school children who scored 70T or higher in the aggression scale which was a sub?\item of Korean Child Behavior Checklist(K-CBCL), and showed social-cognitive defects in individual interview using a questionnaire on social information processing. The program was administered twice a week, a total of 12 sessions, and 80 minutes per session, focusing on improvement in emotion recognition, self-assertion and problem-solving ability and the therapeutic factors of play such as motivation, purification and re-experience, Changes in aggression were measured through pretest and posttest using a self-reporting scale (physical · verbal · indirect aggression, negativity and excitability) and a parent-reporting scale (K-CBCL). To examine changes in children’s aggressive behavior during each session, we first defined aggressive behaviors to be assessed and counted the frequency of aggressive behaviors by videotaping free play situation for 20 minutes and examining the film at intervals of 30 seconds (10 seconds’ observation and 20 seconds’ recording) by two observers. The results of this study are as follows. The play-based cognitive behavior program reduced self-reported aggression, parent-reported aggression, and children’s aggressive behaviors in individual sessions.
The results suggest that the play-based cognitive behavior program is effective in reducing children’s aggression.
