This study aims to develop remaining ability of mentally retarded children who lack social ability and to make them improve it for successful integration into society. Also this would show the effects of the tea-ceremony, which is suitable for basis of social interaction and basic humane education through using senses and practicing manners, on mentally retarded children's the social problem behaviors. The purpose of this was threefold:
first, the effects of the tea-ceremony activity through five senses on the decrease of mentally retarded children's behaviors of disturbing others
second, the effects of the tea-ceremony activity through five senses on the decrease of mentally retarded children's behaviors of blurting out a remark
third, the effects of the tea-ceremony activity through five senses on the decrease of mentally retarded children's behaviors of losing temper.
The subjects of this study are three 14-year-old mentally retarded children, who go to the middle school for mentally retarded children and attend an after-school program in Gumi.
This study limited the social problem behaviors to three of disturbing others, blurting out a remark and losing temper, which are obstacles for social interaction with others. Also this study observed the frequency of those three kinds of problem behaviors and kept records. It used ABA Single Subject Research Plan for each of three mentally retarded children. There were 20 mediations and 16 observances.
The results show that the tea-ceremony through five senses is effective in reducing the social problem behaviors of disturbing others, blurting out a remark and losing temper. In addition, while the children go through the tea-ceremony, they felt security emotionally and interacted vigorously with their peer.
The conclusion of these results is
first, the tea-ceremony activity through five senses is effective in reducing the social problem behaviors of disturbing others,
second, the tea-ceremony activity through five senses is effective in reducing the social problem behaviors of blurting out a remark,
third, the tea-ceremony activity through five senses is effective in reducing the social problem behaviors of losing temper.
According to this conclusion, this study remains some suggestions. The limited number and the characteristics of subjects for this study can't generalize the conclusion. So there should be more study for many different kinds of retarded children and analysis on it. As more people have concerns about mentally retarded children's social behaviors, there should be more research on the educational programs and methods through various behaviors, to help them acquire social skills and relationships with other people. Finally, more research on individual education program(IEP) is necessary with the tea-ceremony activity through five senses in accordance with respect to the disability of each individual student.
