The purpose of this study was to examine the degree of decision-making participation by teachers in special schools for the mentally retarded and their organizational adaptability by gender, age, type of certificate, special-education career, school size and affiliation. It's additionally meant to determine the correlation among the two factors in order to help teachers for the mentally retarded to adject better school organization. The subjects of this study were selected 400 teachers in charge of special schools for the mentally retarded in the city of Busan, Daegu, Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam, After a survey was conducted, the responses of 287 teachers were gathered, and 252 answer sheets were chosen for analysis. SPSS version 10. 0 program was utilized to implement t-test and F-test, and Scheffe test was carried out as posttest against F-test results. And Pearson correlation was employed to identify the relationship between decision-making participation and organizational adaptability.
First, decision-making participation according to the teachers' variation in a special schools for the mentally retarded is mostly on the average, but in the part of students management and the community relation, it shows higher participation than other variations.
Second, their organizational coherence adaptability was slightly above the average. Especially the improvement of the organizational structure among the subcategories of the organizational adaptability shows low adaptability. From this, we can find that the organizational objective in school is different from that the teachers have in school.
Third, their level of participating in decision making has positively correlated to organizational adaptability. The higher teachers' level of participating in decision making is, the higher the organizational coherence is.
Based on the above-mentioned findings, there are some suggestions about future research efforts:
First, in order to raise the efficiency and effect in school education by role dividing, team approach and horizontal structuralization, we should draw up a plan that improves the participation and adaptability of the whole members of the school in the system towards competition. This may improve the organizational climate improvement and teacher's specifity.
Second, if both qualitative research efforts about decision- making participation and organizational adaptability and quantitative research efforts by utilizing an observation and an interview are made together, practical information will be produced about the special school teachers' high participation of decision-making and the successful adjustment of the teachers to school.
Third, this research investigated only the teachers who are in a special school in Young-Nam area, but wider range of subjects and geographic areas should be examined to generate more general results.
