The goal of this study is to examine the effect of reality therapy group counseling program on career development(Career Self-efficacy, Career Maturity, and Internal-External Control Scale) of middle and high school students, and whether the difference of school grades and gender affect it. To do this, group counseling program Glasser's(1985) based on the reality therapy, Wubbolding's(1986) 'Counseling Cycle Applying reality therapy', and various career counseling programs are synthetically analyzed to form the career group counseling program.
This research has been administered for the subjects of 11 middle school students and 8 high school students(13 females and 6 males). Age distribution is 12-17.
They are divided into two groups of a middle school student group and a high school student group. Tools used for measuring the variables of this research are 'Questionnaire for Career Self-efficacy', 'Questionnaire for Career Maturity', which have been made by 5 Likert scales, and 'Questionnaire for internal-external control', which has been made by bipolar scales. With one-group pre-post test design, it has been administered 9 sessions of intensive career group counseling program for three days. At the last session and 2 months after all counseling sessions, the same instruments are re-administered for the same subjects group.
For the data analysis, frequency distribution, average, and standard deviation are indicated. The methods of quantity analysis include paired t-test by comparing pre-post test and independent t-test by comparing middle school students and high school students.
The results show that the career group counseling based on the reality has worked positive to increase the Career Self-efficacy and Career Maturity of both groups, while there isn't significant difference to internal-external control.
Besides, as for the difference according to the grade and gender, it turned out that only in the attitude area, a sub measure of Career Maturity, there was difference between middle and highschool students, while there wasn't among the rest. It is expected that based on this results, reality therapy group counseling program will be developed and conducted consistently so that more clearly verified, agreed definition of the effect on career development of middle and high school students can be drawn.
