The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of elementary schoolers, who were in a critical period of emotional development, in relation to the use of the Internet. And it's also planned to look into how the parenting attitude of their parents affected their Internet addiction in an attempt to lay the foundation for providing efficient social welfare service as an intervention to prevent and cure their Internet addiction.
The subjects in this study were 520 boy and girl students who were selected from seven fourth-year classes and seven fifth-year classes at four different elementary schools in the city of Daegu. After a survey was conducted, the responses from 501 students were gathered, and 488 answer sheets were analyzed. The incomplete and unreliable answer sheets were ruled out.
The findings of the study were as below:
First, concerning what influenced the Internet addiction of the school children investigated, the length of daily hours and period of being on the Internet and school grades were identified as independent variables that had the biggest impact on that.
Second, the parenting style of their parents exerted an influence on their Internet addiction. The children were most addicted when their fathers were democratic, followed by the protective fathers, laissez-faire fathers and authoritarian fathers. In the case of mothers, the children were most addicted when their mothers were democratic, followed by the protective, authoritarian and laissez-faire mothers.
Third, as for connections between Internet addition level and the affection-hostility and autonomy-control indexes of the parents, the autonomous parenting of the mothers and the affective parenting of the fathers let the children stay away from Internet addiction more.
Based on the above-mentioned findings, there are some suggestions about how to create a sound Internet culture among elementary school youngsters:
First, as school children aren't yet able to get themselves under control, their daily access to the net should be controlled. When their Internet addiction was tested based on their daily access to the net, 32.43 percent of the non-addict group spent three hours or more on the Internet, and 67.57 percent of the addict group spent the same amount of time. Given the fact that Internet addiction affected their academic achievement, their access to the net should be under control.
Second, parents should bring their children up in a democratic manner. Especially, the autonomous attitude of the mothers had a greater impact on their children's Internet addiction than the other types of parenting attitudes, and the affectionate attitude of the fathers exerted an influence on their Internet addiction as well. If parents take an affectionate and autonomous(democratic) attitude toward child rearing, it will be more effective in easing school children's Internet addiction.
Third, preventive education should be provided against Internet addiction. The Internet-related problems of elementary schoolers aren't the matters of themselves or their families only. Those problems should be handled at a social level, and the government should take precautious measures. As there are different sorts of Internet addiction, such as game addiction and indecent material addiction, different therapy programs should be developed to cover offline emotional disturbance and behavioral maladjustment, and preventive programs should be prepared as well.
