This research is to verify the effect of educational program to help improving conjugal relationships through making positive changes on personal dimension such as self-control, marriage satisfaction as a result of conjugal relationship, understanding problems, dealing with stress when solving the conflicts, and on self-esteem, based on three theoretical frames of the reality-therapy, P.E.T, and REBT.
The program was operated to6 couples as experimental sets and 6 couples as controlled sets, who are double-income couples living in P city. The method was qualitative and quantitative in parallel.
The contents of the program were as follows according to the sequence:
1st session: to check the relationship between couples. "We are married to each other ."2nd session: to understand and accept the differences between each other. "You are a Martian, but I'm from Venus. "3rd session: to recognize the reality. "Action makes changes. "4th session: to learn communication skills. "Good conversation that can even pay back $1000 of debt. "5th session: to move into reasonable belief. "Is my thinking a correct answer? "'6th session: to integrate. "We can see the future."
Using the SPSS for Windows 10.0 program, we analyzed the collected data and calculated the frequency and the percentage to understand the general characteristics of the subjects We used compared means and paired-samples t-test of each gender.
The results of the research are as follows.
First, among the experimental sets, the effect of this educational program for improving conjugal relationship on the self-control was positive. By analyzing each gender separately, we found out that the self-control of husbands improved slightly but not statistically significant, but the self-control of wives improved between the prior and post tests. This result is due to the fact that the wives perceived more about the responsibility that the reality-therapy emphasizes. The effect of the program was proved have positive effect on the couples to increase the self-control through the qualitative analysis of the 6-week process.
Second, this program had specific effect on improving the marital satisfaction between the couples. However, the effect on the marital satisfaction differed between each gender. The husbands reported significantly higher satisfaction after the program than before the program, but the wives did not show the statistically significant difference. This result is due to the higher average of marital satisfaction among the wives of the prior test, and due to the fact that the occupations of the wives were mostly professions that can satisfy their fundamental desires according to the reality-therapy. Also, we can assume that the wives have more experiences than husbands to participate in similar educational programs. The effect of the program was proved have specific effect on the couples to have the higher satisfaction through the qualitative analysis of the 6-week process.
Third, the stress-coping skills of the experimental group were analyzed to be increased from the prior test to the post test. By analyzing each gender separately, we found out that the stress-coping skills of the husbands improved with statistically significant difference, but the skills of the wives did not have significant improvements between the prior and post tests. This result is due to the fact that the wives already have higher level of stress-coping skills than the husbands and also they have professional occupations which are less stressful than housekeeping. Also, we can assume that the wives have more experiences than husbands to participate in similar educational programs. The husbands used reflective-attentive hearing and self-speech as the communication skills that showed the improvements of the stress-coping skills. The effect of the program was proved have positive effect on the couples to increase the satisfaction through the qualitative analysis of the 6-week process.
Fourth, the effect of the program on increasing the self-esteem appeared higher on the post test than the prior test. By analyzing each gender separately, we found out that the self-esteem of both the husbands and wives improved with specific difference between the prior and post tests, but the result was not statistically significant. This result is due to the fact that the self-esteem of husbands and wives were all pretty high in the prior test.
The couple manages a nursery home and it is very important for them to build a good relationship with children, parents, and teachers so that they think of attitudes such as accepting others, respects, sympathy, setting limits for the action, sincere relationships, autonomy, and allowance very important and essential. Therefore, we can predict that the self-esteem was measured high in both the prior and the post tests.
The program was proved to have effects on elevating self-control, self-esteem, and marital satisfaction of each individual by improvements of communication skills, through the qualitative analysis of the 6-week process. From this result, the fact that 'the educational program for improving conjugal relationships' has significant effects on self-control, marital satisfaction, stress-coping skills, and self-esteem has been proved, and the qualitative analysis shows that these effects seem to be continued throughout the 6-week process of the program.
The conclusion of the research is as follows.
First, this 'educational program for improving conjugal relationships' has an effect on improving self-control between the couples.
We found out that the way of expressing feelings can have positive effects on every relationship, and we also found out that every timewe act we make choices to fill the strong desires within ourselves according to the selection theory, through understanding and accepting the differences between oneself and others by understanding five essential desires from the reality therapy. We can assume these facts could help increasing the self-control a lot.
Second, the 'educational program for improving conjugal relationships' has an effect on improving marital satisfaction.
In terms of the reality therapy, recognizing the reality through perceiving system and understanding all behavioral-factors can be helpful to recognize W. D. E. P system when the world of my spouse does not accord with theworld that I want, or when the couple is having a trouble and wants to deal with the problem so that they can have higher marital satisfaction.
Third, the 'educational program for improving conjugal relationships' has an effect on improving stress-coping skills between the married couples.
The more the couples are happy together, the more they communicate with each other and exchange their feelings. By practicing the reflective-attentive hearing and the self-speech of P. E. T theory, the couples seemed to have understood the importance of communication. This can be very help fulnot only to the conjugal relationships but also to every other relationship between people.
Fourth, the 'educational program for improving conjugal relationships' has an effect on improving self-esteem. The difference between the results of the prior and the post test was not statistically significant, but we found out that the process of this program of showing oneself to others and knowing that one's weak point can be other people's makes one to have courage and pride to move onto the reasonable belief. This can be helpful to improve self-esteem.
According to the conclusions from above, the topics presented from this research were partially significant and the subjective ratings we received at the end of each session also seem to have tendency to support our research topics.
Therefore, this research suggests that we can develop an effective program based on reality-therapy, P.E.T, and ratio-emotional therapy, if we modify and make up for the weak points of this program.
