This study focuses on the type of problems that appear in Korea Olympiad competition for the elementary Computer Science gifted children, and analyze how creativity functions and produce creative output that appear in the process of solving the problem in directing programming.
The subject of research are Joonho and Hyunjoon who attend H Elementary school in 5th and 6th grade. They were selected in Computer Science area by three stages of tests as potentially gifted in purpose of attending Korea Olympiad in Informatics.
The experiment continued for approximately six months, and applied four problems of Korea Olympiad Competition type of problems and analyzed two students' case study in depth and separately.
This study presented a part of video filmed programming class as a data, and applied observing diary, interview, outcomes and analyzed in depth by using qualitative case study method.
In order to get hold of the creative elements that are the main issue of the study, this study divided the solving process of one problem into four stages, extracted creative elements in each stage according to the creative type of actions by grasping the characteristics and looked into how creative elements worked and produced creative elements in the problem solving process.
As a result, the creative elements that appeared in the process of problem solving correlated dynamically. Computer Science gifted children responded sensitively to the given problems, and the capability to think fluently and versatility added up with the creativity they have and produced original idea to come up with creative output by molding the original ideas.
