Half a century has passed since school counseling was introduced in Korea, yet the system has not been settled in school education for several reasons. Recently, an increasing number of students are going astray, failing to adapt themselves to school life. Teachers have difficulties in guiding maladjusted students, so the necessity and importance of school counseling is higher than ever.
In particular, our school education has taken an aim at the college entrance exam and put stress towards the intellectual education. Students have been limited in the physical, social, emotional and human development. As a result, they are having difficulty growing into a balanced person.
A school is not a place to prepare students for only an entrance exam and grade, but a training place to grow as a human being. In this human education, the role of a teacher, especially a counseling teacher is very important. But the counseling activity interested in the matter of human education is being turned away in this social and educational climate. School education is regared as a preparatory stage of going on to a school of higher grade.
In this thesis, I tried to study the reason counseling activity shows a downward trend. This was done by examining the actual condition of counseling activity and analyzing the problems, Then to give direction to more substantial and desirable counseling activities.
To gain basic materials for activating and developing school counseling by 124 professional counseling teachers were replied.
Although professional counseling teachers who received special counseling education and are interested in counseling must be deployed in school counseling rooms, guide maladjusted students and prevent students' maladjustment. They are doing a lot of tasks irrelevant to counseling and consequently, they cannot be absorbed in giving counsel to students. However, human resources for counseling are increasing as many teachers acquire the certificate of a professional counseling teacher. Using graduate school programs or training programs, students and their parents have great expectation from school counseling. Thus, there must be systems and measures to utilize professional counseling teachers to the maximum. Also activate school counseling and research must be continued on the operation of counseling rooms in order for students and teachers to have confidence in school counseling and enjoy high effects of counseling by allocating professional counseling teachers to counseling rooms and providing professional counseling services.
