There have been the precedent studies on the adaption to the works of newly appointed teachers. As general in most precedent studies, after investigation of the problems on fulfillment of their duty, an improvement strategy for adapting to teaching profession was proposed, focused on the cognitive capability. On the other hand, the current studies consider the effective domain in addition to the cognitive features. Out of the various features in the affective domain, the attention in this study was given to emotional intelligence. In order to search for a solution to problem of adaptability to teaching profession, this study considered the criteria for adaptability such as stress perception, sense of stress control, and coping way with stress, and investigated the relationships with emotional intelligence of a newly appointed teacher.
By using self-reported questionnaire method, investigation was performed for 201 teachers, who were newly appointed within 3 years, and are currently in service at the primary schools of which 5 schools are located in Pyongtaek City, Kyonggido, and 40 schools in Pusan City and the provincial cities in Kyongsangnamdo such as Changwon, Ulsan, Yangsan, and Kimhae. The questions was made up of items for measuring emotional intelligence, occupational stress, sense of stress control, and coping way with stress. For measuring emotional intelligence, the criterion developed by Choi Seung Kyu in 2001 was employed in this study. The occupational stress was measured with the criterion which was reconstructed by Ryu Hyun Mi in 2003 based on the domestic literature which Kim Jung Whui translated (1992).
The criterion for sense of stress control was a Korean edition which Cha Jae Ho et al. had translated ''Criterion for Internal-External Control'' of Rotter into and mended. For measuring the coping way with stress, we deployed the criterion which Park Ahe Sun and Lee Young Hee readjust ''the ways of coping checklist'' to the domestic level in 1992, which Lazarus and Folkman had developed in 1985.
In order to examine the difference between the teacher groups with high and low level of emotional intelligence in occupational stress level, sense of stress control, and coping ways, respectively, difference analyses (ANOVA) and multiple regression analyses were performed. Both Pearson''s correlation analyses and ANOVA test were also performed in order to investigate correlation of occupational stress level with sense of stress control or coping ways.
The obtained results are summarized as follows:
First, the difference in occupational stress level between the group with high emotional intelligence and low was not significant statistically.
Second, it was also found that the group with high emotional intelligence utilize an internal control more frequently in comparison with the group with low emotional intelligence.
Third, considering the coping way with stress, both the active way and the passive way have a significant difference between both groups with high and low emotional intelligence. The subfactors of emotional intelligence which provoke an active way show a significant difference such as self-emotional regulation, self-motivation, another emotion awareness and interpersonal relationship regulation. On the other hand, out of the subfactors of a passive coping way, interpersonal relationship regulation is significant statistically.
Fourth, occupational stress level had no significant correlation with sense of stress control or coping ways. However, there was significant correlation between sense of stress control and coping way. the group with internal control utilizes more frequently an active coping way in comparison with the group with external control. it was also noted that only the way of direct solving problem which is one of the active coping way has significant correlation with sense of stress control. This indicates that sense of stress control is deeply connected with ac active coping way and has close correlation with the mode of solving problem.
