Abstract
The purpose of this study was to understand the early adaptation process of one year old toddlers in an eco-centered child care center, and to explore the characteristics and structures of their early adaptation processes.
The participants of this research total 10 oneyearold toddlers and two teachers in their class of child care center P and the data was collected from March 8th to May 3th, 2006.
The questions and the results of this study were as follows;
First, how is the preliminary adaptation process of oneyearold toddlers of an eco-centered child care center?
To answer this question, the collected data was analysed by dividing the early adaptation process into "the period accompanied by a main child care provider" and "the period separated from a main child care provider".
In the period accompanied by a main child care provider, the toddlers play, explore and exhibit curiosity beside and with their main childcare providers in the class, and they try to deny their teachers. The toddlers recognized their same ages with obstructors at first, but begin to think of the obstructors as human beings live with themselves slowly. The toddlers cannot have good relations with human being such as teachers and the friends easily, but have good relations with objects in the period accompanied by a main rearer. Especially, in the outdoors, they mainly play with various materials, rabbits, and natural objects.
When the toddlers are separated from their main child care providers, some of them show uneasy feelings and eagerly want to see their main child care providers. The teachers try to help the toddlers feel safety and security by accepting their needs. As time goes by, the early-separated toddlers from their main childcare providers become to develop relations with teachers, friends and other people of child care center.
Second, what are the characteristics and structures of the early adaptation process of one year old toddlers of an eco-centered child care center?
In the period of accompanied by a main rearer, the toddlers play, explore and exhibit curiosity beside and with their main child care providers with strange anxiety, and they are mainly related with the objects and nature. In the period of separated from main child care providers, the toddlers try to have various relations with experiencing separation anxieties.
The characteristics and structures of the early adaptation process of toddlers are summarized as follows;
First, the toddlers can begin to connect with active 'appropriation' to the life of the child care center. Second, the toddlers can begin to live 'with pleasure' in the child care center. Third, the toddlers can start to doing 'by themselves'. Fourth, the toddlers can learn to live 'together' with one another.
According to this study, the discussion focused on the vitality of oneyearold toddlers. They can develop living 'with active appropriation', 'with pleasure', 'by themselves', and 'together with others' in an eco-centered child care center after the process of the early adaptation. That is, through the process of the early adaptation, they can live with vitality. In both "the period accompanied by a main child care provider" and "the period separated from a main childcare provider, especially nature help the toddlers' adaptation in an eco-oriented child care center. This means that nature is the best educational tools and teachers.
The researcher considers that the early adaptation process of children in child care centers, and of children who enter elementary schools needs to be studied.
The comparative study between an eco-centered child care center and another institution would help develop the better adaptation program.
