The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of self-concept and achievement motivation have on university student's career decision making. To achieve the purpose of the study, following three research problems were investigated. First, what is the degree of self-concept, achievement motivation, and career decision making of university students? Second, is university student's career decision making related to self-concept and achievement motivation of them? Third, Which variable does a influence on university student's career decision making have?
For this purpose, the subjects consisted of 340 students in three universities in cities urban areas. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires which were developed to investigate self-concept, achievement motivation, and career decision making. The data were analyzed by using one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression.
The results were as follows :
1. The mean score of university students' self-concept was 2.80. The mean score of achievement motivation and career decision making of students was 3.48 and 2.69, respectively.
2. The self-concept perceived university students was different according to sex, major, school year, grade, and the degree of satisfaction about major. The achievement motivation perceived students was different according to sex, major, the degree of satisfaction about major, and religion. The university students' career decision making was different according to sex, age, major, school year, and the degree of satisfaction about major.
The self-concept and the career decision making of girl students were significantly different to those of boy students according to educational course of fathers. The achievement motivation of girl students was different to that of boy students according to educational course of fathers, but wasn't statistically significant. The self-concept, achievement motivation, and career decision making of girl students were different to those of boy students according to educational course of mothers, but wasn't statistically significant.
3. The university students' career decision making was significantly related with self-concept(r=0.428) and achievement motivation(r=0.326). The students' self-concept was significantly related with achievement motivation(r=0.514).
4. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that 25.4% of the university students' career decision making were explained by self-concept, the degree of satisfaction about major, and achievement motivation.
These results suggest that the self-concept and the achievement motivation have effects on university students' career decision making. Therefore career counseling program should be provided for university students based on individual's characteristics.
