The purpose of this study is to analyze how the high school students of single-parent and two-parent families adapt themselves to their school life respectively, and so compare the difference of school life adaptation between the high school students of single-parent and two-parent families. For this purpose, the following research problems were presented.
First, how do the high school students of single-parent families adapt themselves to their school life, and is there the difference of their school life adaption according to gender?
Second, how do the high school students of two-parent families adapt themselves to their school life, and is there the difference of their school life adaption according to gender?
Third, what is the difference of school life adaptation between the high school students of single-parent and two-parent families?
In order to solve these above problems, the subjects of this study were the 405 students of 4 high schools in the rural regions(Iksan-si, Wanju-gun, Gimje-si) of Jeonbuk, and so this study divided such subjects into the high school students of single-parent families and the high school students of two-parent families, and then identified their school life adaptation.
The measurement instrument of this study reorganized the test, which Jeong So Sung (2004) applied and into which Kim Mi Yeong (2001) reorganized the questionnaire, which Mun Gyo Min (1995) revised and complemented in the terms to be understood to elementary school students on the basis of Kim Ho Gwon's standardized test for middle school students, that is, 'My School' domain, which was published by the Korean Testing Center. This test was classified into 4 sub-domains, including class, school, teacher, and friend.
The data analysis of this study used the statistical program of SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) 12.0. This study calculated mean(M) and standard deviation(SD), and executed t-test(Independent Sample Test) in order to test the significance of mean difference between two groups, and the statistical significance level was set up at p<0.01 and p<0.05.
The results, which this study obtained through these methods, are as follows.
For the 57 male students and 59 female students of single-parent families in the sub-domains including class, school, teacher, and friend, the school life adaption showed no significant difference.
For the 114 male students and 175 female students of two-parent families, the result of t-test was 0.000(p<0.01), and female students were higher in mean than male students, and the school life adaption of male and female students showed the significant difference. This proves that female students participate more actively in and adapt themselves better to the entire school life, including class, school, teacher, and friend, than male students.
In the school life adaption of the entire single-parent family students and the entire two-parent family students, the entire two-parent family students were higher in mean than the entire single-parent family students, and the significant difference was shown.
In conclusion, family environment has more influences on the school life of female students than that of male students, and generally the single-parent family students are less self-confident, and more negative in their school life, and less adaptive to school and friend than the two-parent family students.
