The Purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the solution-focused brief group counseling on the problem- solving ability of the female students who attends commercial high school.
The research questions were set up as follows : First, will solution - focused brief counseling improve the students’ confidence in problem-solving? Second, will the solution-focused brief counseling be effective in decreasing students’ approach-avoidance style? Third, will the solution0-focused brief counseling improve the students’ personal control on their problems?
To perform this study, the subjects attended group counseling for four weeks. During the four weeks, the subjects attended brief group counseling twice a week for 120 minutes. The 8- session program was prepared by this researcher based on relevant theories, earlier studies to server the purpose of the study. The subjects were 16 high school students who attends commercial high school. The subjects were assigned into the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group received the solution-focused group counseling program, while the control group didn’t receive any treatment during the period.
The instruments used in this study were the Problem-Solving Inventory(PSI), the social problem- solving Ability scale (D’zurilla & Nezu, 1990) translated by Kim, Young- Mi(1974).
The problem effects were measured by the change in the scores on the social problem-solving ability which was performed before and after the solution- focused brief group counseling program.
The conclusions of this study were as follows; Fist, the solution- focused brief counseling program turned out to have a significant effect in improving students’ confidence in problem-solving, to decrease students’ approach- avoidance style and to improve students’ personal control between the prior and post test in the experimental group.
