The purpose of this study was to examine the sociocultural model of eating behavior and BAS(Behavior Approach System) moderate between sociocultural pressure and body dissatisfaction, eating behavior.
Study 1 was designed to test whether body dissatisfaction mediates the relationship between the internalization of thin ideal body type and eating behaviors. Participants consisted of 168 female university students were asked to complete the questionnaire about the level of internalization , body dissatisfaction and eating behavior. These data were analyzed by using the structural equation modeling. Results revealed that internalization of thin ideal directly affected body dissatisfaction. Body dissatisfaction affected both restraint eating and binge eating. Also, body dissatisfaction mediates the relationship between internalization of thin ideal and eating behaviors.
In Study 2, an examination was made on two groups of member each consisting of sixteen female university students. One group only included students who had a high level of sensitivity in both BIS (Behavior Inhibition System) and BAS; the other group consisted students who had a high level of sensitivity in only BIS but not in BAS.
In order to put sociocultural pressure on the participants, participants were put in a situation where they had to watch thirty different images of slim supermodels. Afterwards, they were tested on their level of satisfaction about their bodies and then they were asked to have a drink of cocoa. The purpose of offering the drink was to examine the participant’s tendency level of food restraint. The results showed that high level of sensitivity in BAS moderated body dissatisfaction.
This research study will be able to help programs and special education in assisting to avoid people’s extreme diet or satiety eating.
