The purpose of this study was to compare stress, coping method, self-esteem and mental health of the nursing college students in Korea and China.
The subjects were 171 nursing college students from C university in Korea and 200 nursing college students from Y university in China. The mental health was measured by the Symptom checklist 90-R developed by Derogaris et al.(1973) and translated by Kim et al. (1978) into a standardized short form, and lower scores represent better mental health. The stress and coping method were measured by Cohen(1988)'s instrument that was translated by Lee(2003). The self-esteem was measured by Self-Esteem Scale of Rosenberg(1965) that was translated by Choi (1998).
The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients.
The results of this study were as follows:
    1. The mean score of mental health was 63.25 for Korean nursing students, and 74.04 for Chinese nursing students. Korean students showed better mental health status than Chinese students (t=-2.334, p=0.020).
    2. There was no significant difference in the levels of stress (t=0.081, p=0.935) between Korean and Chinese students. But stress related to clinical experiences (t=5.598, p=0.000) and to college environment (t=-5.227, p=0.000) were significantly different between Korean and Chinese students.
The students reported significantly different areas that they used coping methods such as nursing classroom (t=2.990, p=0.003), clinical experiences (t=-6.430, p=0.000), other classroom (t=-11.850, p=0.000), college environment (t=-6.170, p=0.000) and social/personal environment (t=9.430, p=0.000). The overall coping methods were not significantly different between Korean and Chinese nursing students (t=-0.709, p=0.478).
    3. The mean self-esteem score was 3.04 for Korean nursing students, and 2.93 for China students, which was significantly different (t=2.53, p=0.012).
    4. There was significant difference in the mental health status (F=6.814, p=0.000) and levels of stress (F=10.017, p=0.000) according to the grade of Korean nursing students. There was statistically significant difference in the mental health status (F=5.082, p=0.002), levels of stress(F=4.93, p=0.003) and self-esteem(F=5.807, p=0.001) according to the satisfaction of Korean nursing students.
There were significant difference in the self-esteem according to the grade (F=5.263, p=0.002) and economic status of China nursing students.
    5. The lower score of mental health (better mental health) was significantly related with less stress and more self-esteem in both Korean and Chinese students, with less coping method in Chinese students (r=0.353, p<0.01). The levels of stress was positively correlated with coping methods, and negatively correlated with self-esteem in Korean and Chinese students. There was significant negative correlation between the coping method and self-esteem in Chinese college nursing students(r=-0.247, p<0.01) but not significant for Korean students.
In conclusion, Korean nursing students reported better mental health, lower self-esteem, and more stress related to college environment than Chinese students. In nursing students from both countries, better mental health was significantly related with less stress and higher self-esteem, which could be applicable to nursing intervention to improve mental health for nursing students.
