This study was designed to examine the basic data for an effective measure for the caregiver's burden and adaptation of Industrial Accident Patient.
The duration of this study was between December of 2004 and April of 2005, the subjects were a total of 149 caregiver who had their caregiver in one of four hospitals (Changwon, Sunchen, Daejeon, and Taeback) of 9 hospitals which were under Workers Accident Medical Corporation and had in the medical centers in Gyeongnam area (located in Geojei, Kimhae, and Masan) for industrial accident.
The questionnaire included a total of 33 items of a 5 score Liker scale, which consisted of 10 items regarding objective burdens, 12 items regarding the subjective burdens, and 11 items regarding the adaptation.
The data were computerized by the SPSS/pc for Window. The credibility was obtained by Cronbach's α. General characteristics used real number and the percentage, burden and adaptation used average and standard deviation, burden and adaptation lated to general characteristics used t-test and ANOVA, and the correlation between burden and adaptation used Pearson's correlation.
The results of the study were summarized as follows:
1) The burden felt by the caregiver of the patients who were in hospital was more than 'average', and objective burden(3.75±0.79) was higher than subjective one(3.41±0.68). The highest item of objective burden was ‘I lack my time for myself(excursion and vacation)(4.13±0.97)’, and the highest of subjective burden was 'I think the patient need me(4.62±0.65)‘.
2) The adaptation felt by the caregiver was more than 'average'(3.47±0.66). The highest item was 'I have a lot of things to appreciate in the world(4.28±3.44)‘, and the lowest item was 'I take well care of my health(2.79±0.98)’.
3) The objective burden of the caregiver based on the general characteristics varied in the relationship between the caregiver and the patient(F=8.14, p〈.05), the level of education of the caregiver(F=7.05, p〈.05), the age of the caregiver(F=8.27, p 〈.05), nursing period(F=7.78, p〈.05), nursing time per day(F=5.58, p〈.05), and so forth. The subjective burden was significantly related to the relationship between the caregiver and the patient(F=12.87, p〈.05), the level of education of the caregiver(F=6.56, p〈.05), the age of the caregiver(F=11.20, p〈.05), nursing period(F=14.4, p〈.05), nursing time per day(F=7.53, p〈.05), and the religion(F=4.09, p〈0.5).
4) The adaptation of the caregiver based on the general characteristics varied in monthly income(F=6.72, p〈.05) and nursing period(F=5.40, p〈.05).
5) The objective and subjective burden of the caregiver were significantly related each other(r=.781, p=.000). The relationship between the burden and adaptation of the caregiver were reverse(r=-.230, p=.005).
In conclusion, even though the caregiver have high burden, they positively adaptation it. Therefore, the burden should be analyzed on a long-term and short-term basis by related establishments to provide them with a place for rest. The burden could be reduced by using counselling by proper supportive groups to eliminate negative feelings and providing them with information of nursing through programs.
