This study aimed to investigate the mediating effects of optimism and pessimism between the adult attachment dimensions and depression level. A total of 507 college student(367 male, 339 female) completed Revised Adult attachment Scale, Life Orientation Test-Devised, Beck Depression Inventory. Data were analyzed with SPSS 11.5, AMOS 5.0. The statistical methods are used frequency analysis, correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling(SEM) for path analysis.
The result showed that optimism mediated relations between secure attachment(attachment-depend, attachment-close) and depression, and pessimism mediated relations between insecure attachment(attachment-anxiety) and depression. Optimism completely mediated the relations between attachment-close and depression, partially mediated the relations between attachment-depend and depression. Pessimism partially mediated the relations between attachment-anxiety and depression. The result demonstrated that optimism acts as a buffering factors of the depression whereas pessimism as a vulnerable factor in the onset of depression. Based on the finding, implications to therapeutic interventions were discussed, Limitations of the current study and the suggestions for further research were also offered.
